WATCH: MLB Legend Announces Bid for Dianne Feinstein’s California Senate Seat

California baseball legend Steve Garvey launched a campaign on Tuesday as a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate seat that was held by the late Democratic senator Dianne Feinstein.

The 74-year-old Garvey, a former Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres first baseman, brings star power that could distinguish his candidacy in a crowded field.

California, which has not elected a Republican to the Senate since 1988, will vote in the November 2024 general election to fill Feinstein’s seat. After Feinstein’s death on Sept. 29, California governor Gavin Newsom appointed Laphonza Butler, a former labor leader and head of the political action committee Emily’s List, to serve out the remainder of Feinstein’s term.

So far, 14 candidates—including six Republicans—plan to run next year, according to Federal Election Commission data. The most prominent Democratic candidates are three current members of the U.S. House of Representatives: Barbara Lee, Katie Porter, and Adam Schiff. Butler has not said whether she will seek election to the seat.

Garvey, who left baseball in 1987, told Reuters in an interview on Monday that he would run as a common-sense candidate and look to tackle quality-of-life issues in the high-cost state.

With his folksy manner and his celebrity, the former Most Valuable Player and All-Star might be more likely to make it through California’s so-called jungle primary, which advances the top two vote-getters regardless of party, to the general election. From there, Garvey could pose more of a challenge to Democrats’ razor-thin majority in the Senate than most California Republicans.

Feinstein, running against fellow Democrat Kevin de Leon in her last general election for the Senate seat, won with 54 percent of the vote, her thinnest margin since her election to her first full Senate term in 1994.

“I never took the field for Democrats or Republicans or independents,” Garvey said on Monday, standing in the shadow of Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. “I took the field for all the fans, and now I’m running for all the people.”

Garvey declined to describe his politics in detail and would not say whether he supported former president Donald Trump’s bid to become the Republican Party’s nominee for the 2024 presidential election.

“Come a year from now, when I go to vote, I’ll look at the candidates and I’ll vote for the one that I think is best for the country and for the people,” he said.

Garvey did, however, call for a change in the rules that led to last week’s ousting of Kevin McCarthy, a fellow Californian, as House of Representatives speaker.

“That so few people could take down the speaker of the House of Representatives is sad,” he said, referring to the small group of right-wing Republicans who voted to remove McCarthy.

Since leaving baseball, Garvey has done charity work for health-related organizations including Ronald McDonald House and the ALS Society, and run a business working with companies on branding corporate awareness, his campaign said.

Baseball was good training for the rough-and-tumble of U.S. politics, Garvey said, because he “had the opportunity to be up, with the game on the line, when 50,000 people were booing me.”

Bond yields ease, stocks near flat ahead of Fed minutes

2023-10-11T15:43:28Z

U.S. Treasury yields fell again and global stock indexes were little changed on Wednesday as investors awaited minutes from the last Federal Reserve meeting, while oil prices dropped even as fighting continued between Palestinian militants and Israel.

The dollar slipped after data showed U.S. producer prices increased more than expected in September but underlying inflation pressures at the factory gate continued to moderate.

Also key to investors will be September’s consumer price data, which is due Thursday.

The Fed minutes are due later Wednesday, and investors will assess them for further hints about the economic outlook and where U.S. rates are heading.

Oil prices spiked on Monday in the wake of Hamas’ weekend attack on southern Israel. On Wednesday, Israel formed an emergency unity government as it pounded Gaza to root out Hamas.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI) fell 21.34 points, or 0.06%, to 33,717.96, the S&P 500 (.SPX) gained 2.55 points, or 0.06%, to 4,360.79 and the Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC) added 73.26 points, or 0.54%, to 13,636.10.

The pan-European STOXX 600 index (.STOXX) rose 0.15% and MSCI’s gauge of stocks across the globe (.MIWD00000PUS) gained 0.19%.

Global stocks have edged higher in recent sessions with U.S. bond yields – which underpin borrowing costs around the world – easing as Fed officials have suggested interest rate hikes may be over for now.

“There’s optimism that the disinflation process is still intact despite some of the hot numbers that we got today,” said Edward Moya, senior market analyst at OANDA in New York, adding that building material margins had impacted the data.

The dollar index , which tracks the U.S. currency against six others, touched a two-week low of 105.550, while the euro rose to its highest since Sept. 25 at $1.0634.

In Treasuries, the U.S. 10 year yield was down at 4.59%.

U.S. crude fell 2.68% to $83.67 per barrel and Brent was at $85.73, down 2.19% on the day.

In other commodities, spot gold added 0.5% to $1,870.09 an ounce.

Justice Department Won’t Charge Border Patrol Agents Who Killed Native Man

Federal authorities will not bring charges against U.S. Border Patrol agents who shot and killed a Native American man outside his home in southern Arizona earlier this year.

Late last month, federal prosecutors in Arizona invited the family of 58-year-old Raymond Mattia to meet in Sells, Arizona, a main population center of the Tohono O’odham Nation, which spans large swaths of the U.S.-Mexico border.

Mattia’s loved ones and legal team attended the September 19 meeting under the impression that lingering questions surrounding Mattia’s May 18 killing would finally be answered. Instead, the family says they were given general descriptions of the law alongside confirmation that the officers and agents involved in the shooting would not face charges. Federal prosecutors, joined by a tribal liaison and an FBI agent, refused to answer questions as to how, specifically, the government reached its conclusion.

“It felt like we lost him again.”

It’s kind of still surreal,” Mattia’s niece, Yvonne Nevarez, who attended the meeting, told The Intercept. “It felt like we lost him again.”

Prosecutors gave the family the impression they would have their questions answered at the meeting, said Ryan Stitt, a California-based attorney for Mattia’s relatives. Stitt said the refusal to answer questions undercut new Justice Department guidelines on the rights of crime victims.

“We wanted to have a fact-driven discussion about what happened to better understand their decision not to prosecute,” Stitt told The Intercept. “I was very clear that I did not want to recommend to the family that they come to this meeting if it wasn’t going to be a fact-driven discussion.”

In the absence of answers, Mattia’s relatives plan to file a civil rights lawsuit against the federal government. “It was disappointing and upsetting for the family,” Stitt said. “It puts them in a position where they have to file a lawsuit to get basic questions answered, like who shot Ray and why.”

In a statement to The Intercept, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona said, “Department of Justice employees, including supervisory and line Assistant U.S. Attorneys, a victim advocate and an FBI agent, met with Mr. Mattia’s family and the family’s lawyers in Sells on September 19 for more than an hour.”

“The employees explained our conclusion in the criminal investigation — that the agents’ use of force under the facts and circumstances presented in this case does not rise to the level of a federal criminal civil rights violation or a criminal violation assimilated under Arizona law — and addressed questions posed by the family and the lawyers,” spokesperson Zach Stoebe said. “We decline to comment more specifically on the meeting between the family and the Department employees: victims have an inherent right to speak with the press, and to criticize their government.”

Edited Body Camera Footage

Mattia spent the entirety of his life in Menagers Dam, a remote Tohono O’odham village situated directly on the border, where he was an active member of the community, artist, and avid hunter. In June, Customs and Border Protection, the Border Patrol’s parent agency, released body camera footage of his final moments there, compiled in a 28-minute edited video.

Shortly before he was killed, Mattia had exchanged a series of text messages with his sister, reporting that three men — presumed border crossers — had been in his home demanding to use his phone. The confrontation was apparently tense, with Mattia grabbing his hunting knife to run the men off. Mattia told his sister he called authorities to report the incident.

Soon after the exchange, a convoy of law enforcement vehicles rolled into the village. According to CBP, Border Patrol agents were responding to a call for back-up from Tohono O’odham police, who had received a report of shots fired in the area. No names or addresses were given, and the origin of the purported shots was unclear.

The team met in the dark at a recreation center. The Border Patrol agents wore tactical gear and carried rifles. “It’s going to be a little bit of a guessing game trying to find it,” a Tohono O’odham police officer said of their target, according to the body camera footage. “I don’t know exactly where that motherfucker’s at.”

The tribal officer led the agents to Mattia’s home. Mattia stepped out in the dark to greet them. He was ordered to step forward and show his hands. As Mattia complied with the commands, law enforcement officials mistook a cellphone in his hand for a gun. Initial reports indicated as many as 38 rounds were fired. A medical examiner’s report, ruling the case a homicide, said Mattia was shot nine times. The body camera footage indicated that roughly 31 seconds passed from the moment Mattia received his first command to the moment the first shot was fired.

Though Mattia’s family went into last month’s meeting with notice that charges would not be filed, they still had questions. From the outset, the edited body camera footage had raised their concerns.

“We mostly wanted to know why we weren’t allowed to view the entire video,” Nevarez said. “We also wanted to ask if there was something that they saw that we didn’t.”

Additionally, the family sought clarity on the murky circumstances that brought the authorities to Mattia’s door in the first place. They wanted to know if investigators had considered the mindset of the agents who responded to the call. Having reviewed the body camera footage herself, Nevarez thought it looked like less like law enforcement and more like battlefield prep for a night raid on an enemy compound.

“They were all there, hyped up, walking in like a war zone,” she said. “He really didn’t have a chance. They were out to get somebody.”

Victims Rights

Ahead of the meeting, at the request of the assistant U.S. attorney leading the government’s case, Stitt shared a list of the family’s questions. The two sides had agreed that they qualified as victims under the Crime Victims’ Rights Act. That meant the family was entitled to rights established in revised guidelines Attorney General Merrick Garland unveiled in 2022.

The new rules — which went into effect this year and which Garland described as “victim-centered and trauma-informed” — advise federal authorities that a “strong presumption exists in favor of providing, rather than withholding, assistance and services” to victims. In meetings, the guidelines say, prosecutors should strive to both obtain and share information.

“We were very clear we wanted to assert their rights under the rules as victims to the fullest extent possible,” Stitt said. The questions the family had were neither complicated nor sensitive, he argued. They wanted to know how many shots were fired and if the Tohono O’odham police officer on hand participated in the shooting.

“They would not answer that question,” Stitt said. “They would not answer the question about how many shots were fired or why. They said that all the Border Patrol officers made statements to the FBI but would not disclose any detail about those statements other than they exist.”

At one point, Stitt said, the family was told that the purpose of the meeting was not to gather ammunition for a civil lawsuit. The comment was surprising and unsettling, given that the same federal prosecutor responsible for overseeing the decision to not bring criminal charges in Mattia’s case would also defend the federal government if his family brought a civil suit.

“It seems like it was an inappropriate response to the family to treat the meeting as just a way to tell them that no charges will be filed.”

“No civil case has been filed, and the family is looking for honest questions about what happened,” Stitt said. “We certainly can’t say that they’ve acted unethically, but we obviously have a lot of questions, and we were hopeful to get answers during the meeting. It seems like it was an inappropriate response to the family to treat the meeting as just a way to tell them that no charges will be filed and to provide no further factual explanation why.”

Among the most pressing of the family’s concerns, Nevarez said, was the unanswered question of what — if anything — the federal government intends to do to disentangle the relationship between the Tohono O’odham Nation Police Department and the U.S. Border Patrol going forward.

“We feel like we don’t even want to call TOPD or trust TOPD anymore because they can call Border Patrol just like they did for my uncle Ray,” she said. “We’re afraid the same thing would happen to us.”

Recent statement by French president that Azerbaijan has problems with international law can only cause laughter – President Ilham Aliyev

“France`s numerous accusations, groundless threats and blackmail against Azerbaijan have had no effect. The recent statement by the President of France that Azerbaijan has problems with international law can only cause laughter. Azerbaijan has not violated international law. We fought on our territory, we suppressed separatism, we observed all humanitarian norms and all Geneva Conventions. In fact, international law has been violated for 30 years by France’s protégé and today’s main ally, Armenia, which occupied the territory of another state,” said President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev as he met with the participants of the 53rd meeting of the Council of Heads of Security Agencies and Special Services of the CIS member countries, News.Az reports.

“One and a half million Algerians were exterminated by the French regime just because they were Algerians and Muslims. That is genocide. Not to mention France’s bloody crimes across Africa, in other parts of Africa and around the world. And the fact that France still retains its colonies to this day is incomprehensible. Azerbaijan, as the Chair of the Non-Aligned Movement, and I personally raised this issue at the summits of the Non-Aligned Movement. And this country, which has a bloody colonial past, which some African countries cannot get rid of to this day no matter how hard they try, accuses us of violating international law. This is absurd,” the head of state noted.

An emergency government was formed on Wednesday afternoon after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and National Unity leader Benny Gantz met at the IDF headquarters in Tel Aviv earlier in the morning.

The meeting lasted half an hour after which lawyers representing the Likud and National Unity stayed behind to finalize the details.

As part of the deal, Gantz and fellow party member Gadi Eisenkot will be sworn in as ministers and will join a war cabinet with Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

There has been a widespread call for an emergency government in Israel since Netanyahu declared war on Hamas on Saturday following their massive attack on Israel that morning.

The Hezbollah terrorist movement warned on Wednesday that it considers the US a “full partner” with Israel in the ongoing war launched by Hamas this week, saying it was “not frightened” by the entry of a US aircraft carrier to the area.

“We consider the United States a full partner in the Zionist aggression and hold it fully responsible for the killing, criminality, siege, destruction of homes, and horrific massacres against defenseless civilians, including children, women, and the elderly,” said Hezbollah.

“We call on the masses of our Arab and Islamic nation, which knows the ugly truth of America and its aggression against the peoples of our nation in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan, to condemn the American intervention and its international and regional partners and to expose this intervention at all political, popular, media, and legal levels and in various regional and international forums and gatherings.”

This is a developing story.

Serb leader“s secession policy threatens Bosnia settlement, says peace envoy

2023-10-11T11:28:44Z

The secessionist policy of Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik is a key challenge to the political settlement that ended Bosnia’s 1992-1995 ethnic war, international peace envoy Christian Schmidt said in an interview on Wednesday.

Dodik, who is president of the autonomous Serb Republic, has long advocated the secession of the Serb-dominated region from Bosnia.

“He is not accepting Bosnia and Herzegovina, he gives a spin which is absolutely wrong,” said Schmidt, a former German government minister who acts as international High Representative, tasked with civilian implementation of the 1995 Dayton peace accords.

“This is a danger,” said Schmidt, who as High Representative is also the ultimate interpreter of the peace accords with powers to impose laws and sack officials seen as obstructing peace.

The Dayton accords divided the country – where 100,000 people were killed during the three-and-a-half year war – into two autonomous regions, the Serb Republic and the Bosniak-Croat Federation, linked via a weak central government.

Dodik was charged in August by the state prosecutors with defying decisions by Schmidt, after he had signed two laws that Schmidt had revoked for violating the constitution and the terms of the peace deal.

Last month, pro-Russian Dodik banned Schmidt, who he says is not a legitimate envoy because he was not endorsed by the United Nations Security Council, from entering the region, while his supporters launched protests against his indictment at the administrative boundaries between the two regions under slogan “The Border Exists”.

“He (Dodik) is playing with Republika Srpska as if there would not have been a Dayton agreement, and this is challenging and dangerous, we cannot follow this,” Schmidt said.

Schmidt said that Dodik could end up with his people in kind of Transdniestria, a reference to the pro-Russian region of eastern Moldova that broke away in 1992 but still lacks international recognition.

He also said that international partners negotiating Bosnia’s path towards European Union integration should not negotiate with nationalist Dodik about basic issues.

“I strongly believe in European integration, but not to the prices being fixed by Dodik but to European standards,” Schmidt said.

He also warned against interference of neighbouring Croatia and Serbia in Bosnia’s internal matters, and said that Serb ally Russia could also play a destructive role.
