Trump vs Biden Poll (Jan 2024)

ActiVote’s January 4th, 2024 presidential poll finds that former President Trump leads current President Biden by 8.0%. The poll was taken among 841 likely presidential election voters: ActiVote app users who recently updated their presidential candidate preference. The poll has been weighted to represent the national electorate (including voting chance in presidential elections) and has a mean average error of 3.4%.

Trump leads Biden in rural and suburban areas, while Biden leads Trump in urban areas.

Consistent with our September 2023 poll, this poll shows again a surprising lead for Trump among the youngest voters. We wonder whether there is a relationship with the increased disapproval we found in our last Biden Approval rating poll especially from the progressive left. In any case: Trump at this point wins every single age group.

No surprises in the split between women (favoring Biden) and men (favoring Trump).

Extraordinary in this poll is that Republicans almost unanimously favor Trump over Biden, while 1 in 6 Democrats do not support Biden. Independents lean towards Trump by a 9% margin.

Trump beats Biden among White voters as expected. The surprising find of our poll is that Latinos favor Trump, while Black support for Biden (which was 3:1 in our September poll) is now only 2:1 in this poll.

Biden does best among those with the highest incomes, but even among those voters, Trump ekes out a narrow win. Trump easily leads both the middle income and especially the lower income voters.

Biden has a small advantage among those who have finished college, while Trump does best among those who do not have a 4-years college degree.

The Australian’s Washington Correspondent Adam Creighton says former United States president Donald Trump is leading in the polls ahead of the Iowa caucus.

“I think the truth is at the moment Trump is winning,” Mr Creighton told Sky News host Caleb Bond.

“We’ll find out, the first big test is next week at the Iowa primaries where we just see the true strength of Donald Trump’s support.

“I mean he’s way ahead in the polls, but we still haven’t had a proper vote.

“So we have to wait and see.”

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken continues tour of Middle East | BBC News

The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is continuing his diplomatic efforts in the Middle East, in a bid to prevent a regional escalation due to the conflict in Gaza.

Blinken will hold talks in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia on containing the international shipping threat in the Red Sea by Houthi rebels.

He will then travel to Israel, after warning that the Gaza conflict could spread across the region without concerted peace efforts.

Blinken started the five-day Middle East diplomatic effort in Jordan and Qatar on Sunday, seeking to avert wider unrest in the region.

Dutch man sabotaged Iranian nuclear program without Dutch government’s knowledge: report

Natanz_nuclear.jpg?h=ddb1ad0c

In 2008, a Dutchman played a crucial role in the United States and Israeli-led operation to sabotage Iran’s nuclear program. The then 36-year-old Erik van Sabben infiltrated an Iranian nuclear complex and released the infamous Stuxnet virus, paralyzing the country’s nuclear program. The AIVD recruited the man, but Dutch politicians knew nothing about the operation, the Volkskrant reports after investigating the sabotage for two years.

A few years ago, the Volkskrant revealed that the Dutch intelligence services AIVD and MIVD had recruited the infiltrator in this sabotage operation. But at the time, it was believed to have been an Iranian engineer. In the meantime, the newspaper continued to investigate the matter, speaking to dozens of people involved, including 19 employees of the AIVD and MIVD.

They told the newspaper that Dutchman Van Sabben infiltrated the underground nuclear complex in the city of Natanz and installed equipment infected with the highly sophisticated Stuxnet virus. According to the newspaper, the software cost over a billion dollars to develop. It caused a large number of nuclear centrifuges to break down, delaying the nuclear program by several years, according to estimates.

No one in the Netherlands knew that this new type of cyber weapon was being used in the operation, the Volkskrant wrote. According to the investigative journalists, the intelligence services knew they were participating in the sabotage of the Iranian nuclear program but not that their agent was bringing in Stuxnet. “The Americans used us,” one intelligence source told the Volkskrant.

Strikingly, the Balkenede IV Cabinet apparently was not informed about the operation at all. According to the newspaper, the Stiekem committee, which translates to “secret committee,” where the largest political parties are informed about the intelligence services’ actions, also knew nothing about the Netherlands participating in this operation.

Van Sabben immediately left Iran after successfully sabotaging the country’s nuclear program, the researchers concluded. He died two weeks later in a motorcycle accident near his home in Dubai. Nothing points to foul play, the Volkskrant said after speaking with people at the crash scene. Though, an anonymous MIVD employee told the newspaper that Van Sabben “paid a high price.”

Van Sabben was recruited by the AIVD in 2005, according to the newspaper. His technical background, many contacts in the region, and links with Iran – he already did business in Iran and was married to an Iranian woman with family in the country – made him ideal for the mission.

After his death, an article in the United Arab Emirates newspaper The National praised Van Sabben as an engineer who made an important contribution to the Gulf State. The article noted that he traveled a lot for his work, mentioning Iran along with Sudan, Yemen, and East Africa. According to the Volkskrant, Van Sabben released Stuxnet into the Natanz nuclear complex during one of those trips to Iran. The virus was likely in a water pump that Van Sabben had installed there.

It is unclear whether the Dutchman knew about his role in the sabotage operation, the Volkskrant wrote.

Several parliamentarians demanded clarification about the operation, including why the government and parliament did not know about it. The intelligence services told the newspaper they cannot comment substantively on the publication. An anonymous executive at the AIVD said that the government may have deliberately not been informed of the operation due to the potential political consequences. It was customary to “sweep the Prime Minister’s doorstep clean,” they said.

Identity of one of French spies imprisoned in Azerbaijan revealed

The identity of one of the persons arrested for espionage activities conducted by the French Foreign Intelligence Service in Azerbaijan has been revealed.

His name is Martin Ryan, about whom French journalist Leo Nicolian of Armenian origin wrote on X on January 7, Report informs.

He noted that Ryan was arrested in Baku on December 4. Martin Ryan, CEO of Merkorama LLC, is accused of espionage. He was used (manipulated) by agents of France’s 2 DGSE (Directorate-General for External Security), who were later expelled from Baku, who forced him to cooperate secretly.

Ryan, a French citizen, was arrested on December 4 for espionage for the benefit of French intelligence and is currently in prison in Baku.

According to the information previously published in the Western media, as a result of the investigations and arrests carried out by the State Security Service of the Republic of Azerbaijan in early December 2023, a wide spy network of French special services involved in various operations in Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and several countries in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia has been exposed in Azerbaijan.

In a short period of time, dozens of French secret agents, some of whom served in Azerbaijan at that time or earlier, and some of whom continued to work undercover in various countries and prestigious international organizations, were discovered.

The Azerbaijani side has not yet made an official statement regarding the mentioned arrests.

On December 20, 2023, French President Emmanuel Macron dismissed the head of the French Directorate-General of External Security (DGSE), Bernard Emie.

Nikolas Lerner, who headed the General Directorate of Internal Security (DGSI), was appointed the new head of the DGSE.
