In Nineteen Eighty-Four, the Party manipulates people’s perception of reality, so that citizens of Oceania believe that “war is peace” and “ignorance is strength”.

Russia today has a similar feel about it.

The state media here claims that Russia’s war in Ukraine is not an invasion, but a defensive operation; that Russian soldiers are not occupiers, but liberators; that the West is waging war on Russia, when, in reality, it was the Kremlin that ordered the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Over the weekend, US President Joe Biden proposed a three-phase ceasefire plan between Israel and Hamas. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has tentatively accepted the proposal but also called it a “not so good plan”. Ministers in the Israeli government have also threatened to quit and withdraw their support to Netanyahu if he accepts the plan. On the other hand, Hamas has said that they will accept Biden’s ceasefire proposal if Israel accepts it first. Meanwhile, thousands of Israelis rallied as they urged Netanyahu to accept Biden’s proposal to secure the release of hostages.

June 3, 1940: When Troops Fighting Nazi Germany Were Evacuated from Dunkirk | Firstpost Rewind

On this day in 1940, around 3,35,000 Allied troops were evacuated from Dunkirk. They had been sandwiched between the sea and Nazi soldiers. Britain had to enlist fishing boats and ferries to bring back the trapped troops. It remains one of the biggest and most miraculous evacuations in military history.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the public face of the federal government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, defended himself in a GOP-led House subcommittee hearing Monday morning against accusations of improper conduct.

The hearing was the latest effort among Republicans to question the U.S. response to the pandemic, including how pandemic prevention plans were created and communicated.

Monday’s session was in part focused on the origins of the pandemic and the nation’s role in virus research in China. There are a number of theories about how COVID’s spread began, including a natural jump from animals to humans and a laboratory leak. Intelligence assessments on how the virus began are inconclusive.

When asked about how to navigate the next pandemic, Dr. Anthony Fauci, who led much of the U.S. response to the COVID-19 pandemic, cautioned that “you’ve got to be careful when you’re dealing with a moving target” during congressional testimony Monday.

Mitch Benzine, staff director for the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, asked Fauci, if it would have been better to “more narrowly craft public health measures to specifically favor those demographics” that were disproportionately affected by the virus.

“The answer is yes, but you have to be careful,” said Fauci, who directed the National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases before he retired in 2022. Fauci cautioned that outbreaks complicate responses in ways that sometimes are not fully appreciated until enough time has passed.

Dr. Anthony Fauci told Republican Rep. Nicole Malliotakis of New York during a House hearing on the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic that he didn’t think the belief that the virus originated in a lab was inherently a conspiracy theory, but did believe the “distortions” of that suggestion were conspiracy theories.

“What is conspiracy is the kind of distortions of that particular subject, like it was a lab leak and I was parachuted into the CIA like Jason Bourne and told the CIA that they should really not be talking about a lab leak,” Fauci said.

Malliotakis grilled Fauci on allegations that he conducted official government business on personal email accounts in an effort to evade public records laws, which Fauci also denied.
