Juvenile social play predicts adult reproductive success in male bottlenose dolphins, a new study has found.
Fresh findings published today in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences led by researchers from the University of Bristol and University of Western Australia, show that juvenile male dolphins with strong social bonds practice adult-like reproductive behaviours when playing together, and those juvenile males who spend more time practicing will father more offspring as adults. The study provides rare evidence for a link between juvenile social play and reproductive success in a wild animal.
In collaboration with international colleagues, the scientists spent years observing the behavior of juvenile male Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins in Shark Bay, Western Australia, and using long-term behavioral and genetic data from this population, they investigated the role of juvenile social play in developing adult male reproductive behavior.
Lead author Dr Katy Holmes, who completed this work as part of her doctoral research at the University of Western Australia, said: “We found that juvenile play involves immature versions of adult reproductive behaviors that are crucial for males to access and mate with estrous females, and the time spent doing these play behaviors predicts how many offspring males eventually sire as adults.”
Adult male dolphins in Shark Bay form long-term alliances to help each other secure access to females and these alliances are formed between males who were closely bonded as juveniles. As adults, pairs or trios of allied males will coordinate their behavior to consort individual females, and this work shows that young males practice this coordination with their likely future allies, years before they become sexually mature. “Our work is exciting because historically it has been notoriously difficult to link play behavior to reproductive success, in this case the number of sired offspring, in wild animals,” Holmes noted.
Senior author Dr Stephanie King, Associate Professor from Bristol’s School of Biological Sciences added: “Play behavior is widespread in humans and other animals, but the reasons that animals play together have long remained a mystery. This study provides compelling support for the idea that animals in the wild play together to practice behaviors that will be important for them as adults, and that if they practice enough, they will be more successful as adults.”

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz must ask for forgiveness from Ukrainians for playing a role in plunging their country into misery and helping to revive Nazi ideology, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has said.
Writing on Telegram, Medvedev, who now serves as deputy chairman of the Security Council of Russia, lashed out at Scholz, who argued that President Vladimir Putin “must finally realize” that “Ukraine is strong and will not be forced to its knees or forced to surrender.”
He went on to say that “there can only be a just peace for Ukraine,” adding that “working for peace does not mean simply raising the white flag,” while reiterating Berlin’s commitment to supporting Kiev.
In response, Medvedev called Scholz “a rotten liverwurst,” who he said “unexpectedly became chatty and talked outright drivel.”
he former president claimed that Ukraine has become “a kind of dominion directly controlled by the United States and NATO countries,” adding that Kiev is fully on the Western payroll and “is receiving all kinds of the most lethal weapons, despite the protests of its own people.”
“So where does this strength come from, sausage maker? From exuberant corruption which is completely out of control? From the wholesale theft of this aid by the Zelensky clique? Or from a dying people, half of whom live in Russia and Europe?” Medvedev asked.
Scholz should “get down on his knees and repent before the Ukrainians” for lying to them that they could achieve victory against Russia, and for “dooming them to the slaughter while sacrificing the well-being of the Germans,” according to the former president.
The German chancellor should also take responsibility “for the revival of Nazism” in Ukraine, his own “indescribable mediocrity of management,” and the loss of public confidence in his Social Democratic Party, which makes his predecessors Willy Brandt and Helmut Schmidt “turn over in their graves many times over,” Medvedev said.
The former Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Andrey Melnik, once called Scholz ‘offended liverwurst’. In 2022, the envoy said the chancellor was behaving “not very statesmanlike” after he refused to visit Kiev following Ukraine’s criticism of President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Melnik was sacked following the remarks.

In Russia, according to preliminary information, two Russian “ultra-modern” Su-57 fighters could be hit , and the enemy has suffered casualties among personnel.
Representative of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine Andrey Yusov shared this information during the telethon. “First of all, we state the very fact of defeat. The Main Intelligence Directorate does not comment on the means of destruction, officially, what kind of operation it was, and whose. But everyone can draw their own conclusions. The information is being clarified, and indeed, this is very good news for Ukraine. This is the first combat defeat of this “ultra-modern” aircraft, which Russia is positioning as a fifth-generation aircraft, however, many in the world have doubts about this,” he noted.
Yusov emphasized that this news has indeed already become important and significant for military experts, the international military community, and the Wikipedia article was updated very quickly, but that’s not all. “There is data that continues to be clarified, and preliminary information that there could be two affected Su-57 aircraft. There is also information about irretrievable losses and wounded among the occupiers’ personnel,” said a representative of the Main Intelligence Directorate.
He emphasized that enemy Su-57 aircraft, without entering Ukrainian airspace, launched missile attacks specifically on civilian targets and peaceful infrastructure.
The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense reported that on June 8, in the Astrakhan region of the Russian Federation, at the Akhtubinsk airfield, which is located 589 kilometers from the front line, a Su-57 fighter was hit.
Co-founder and executive director of the Ukrainian Center for Security and Cooperation Dmitry Zhmailo believes that the Russian Su-57 aircraft is most likely damaged beyond repair.
“This is a really big victory for us. It is also a big reputational loss for the Russians, comparable to the defeat of a Tu-95 or A-50 aircraft by the Ukrainian Defense Forces. The drones landed next to the Su-57 aircraft in order to hit it with debris, because it was under a certain covering. Most likely, we have cautious optimism that the plane is damaged irrevocably, it will not be able to be restored,” he said on Espreso.
According to the expert, the Russians spent a very long time developing their newest Su-57. Zhmailo added that it was an expensive development.
The expert noted the uniqueness of the difficult operation of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine to destroy the aircraft. As Zhmailo explained, the operation was carried out thanks to systematic strategies to destroy the air defense of the invaders.
“Now we can strike at the Russian border, clearing the way for ourselves to strike in the depths of the Russian Federation. Now we can have quite significant similar results. We have something to hit,” he concluded.
