Antony Blinken says there is Israeli ‘consensus’ on Gaza ceasefire plan

Speaking in Tel Aviv after a series of meetings with Israeli officials, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he believes there is a “strong consensus” among Israeli leaders to move forward with the Gaza ceasefire plan. Blinken mentioned that Netanyahu, whom he met yesterday, reiterated his support for the plan. He also received positive signals from Defence Minister Gallant and other Israeli officials. “This proposal and moving forward on it is the first step,” Blinken told reporters in the Israeli capital. “We want to see it come to fruition.”
Continuing his remarks in Tel Aviv, Blinken addressed Hamas’s role in ceasefire negotiations. He stated that Hamas’s expression of support for a UN-backed Gaza ceasefire plan is a “hopeful sign”. The US remains committed to “the defeat of Hamas”, but Blinken emphasized that military means alone are not sufficient to achieve this goal. “There has to be a clear political plan, a clear humanitarian plan, in order to ensure Hamas does not in any shape or form resume control of Gaza”.

Ukraine’s Controversial Azov Brigade Boasts It’s “More Dangerous” As US Lifts Weapons, Training Ban

Azov Brigade said it will become more “dangerous for Russian occupiers” after the Biden administration’s decision to lift its weapons and training ban on the controversial Ukrainian unit. The US State Department’s decision reverses a ban-imposed years ago amid concerns in Washington about the group’s origins.

The Azov Brigade is known for its tenacious but ultimately unsuccessful defence of the Azovstal steel mill in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Azov Brigade was barred from using US arms over allegations that some of its founders espoused racist, xenophobic and ultranationalist views. The UN human rights officials have also accused the Ukrainian military group of humanitarian violations.

Now the brigade, a one-time volunteer militia, will have access to the same US military assistance as any other unit.

Meanwhile, reacting to the move, the Ukrainian unit said that US weapons will “increase the combat ability of Azov”

“This is a new page in our unit’s history,” the Azov Brigade wrote in a statement on Instagram. “Azov is becoming even more powerful, even more professional and even more dangerous for occupiers.”

“Obtaining western weapons and training from the United States will not only increase the combat ability of Azov, but most importantly, contribute to the preservation of the lives and the health of personnel,” the statement said.
