Brooklyn trailblazers gathered for an evening of celebration and recognition at the annual Schneps Media Brooklyn Power List gala on Thursday night. Honoring leaders making waves in a broad range of industries such as law, business, health and community service, the celebration was filled with powerful connections and high spirits.
Honorees and their guests gathered at El Caribe Country Club at 6 p.m. for cocktails and hors-d’oeuvres, mingling in the entryway. New York Attorney General Letitia James kicked off the night with a speech talking about the role of the city’s local papers.
“It’s critically important that we have local newspapers so that we know what is happening in our respective communities and what’s happening in Brooklyn,” she said. “And it’s also critically important that we honor individuals who have gone on to do amazing things.”
The event was hosted by Schneps Media, which publishes more than 100 local outlets including amNewYork Metro, Brooklyn Paper, and Bay News.
“I know most of the other honorees and they’re all great Brooklyn leaders, and to be in company with such amazing people, it makes me feel very proud of what Schneps does bringing us together,” said Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Randy Peers.
A consistent presence on the Brooklyn Power List, Carlos Naudon President & CEO of Ponce Bank said, “It’s really a recognition of what the bank does in the community and it reflects that we’re trying to uplift the community. [The honor] is not personal — I view it as representative of the bank.” Ponce Bank also sponsors the Best of Brooklyn program where the community selects the best businesses across every sector.
After power networking, the honorees and guests took their seats for the high energy awards celebration where winners happily strutted and danced down the red carpet.
“I love coming to these [Schneps] events every time,” said John Donofrio of Donofrio Inc. “You really make a lot of connections and networking — that’s exactly what we want to do.”
Many honorees took the stage to speak about things close to their hearts, like Clifford Miller, the Associate Executive Director of NYC Health’s Emergency Department.
“It’s truly rewarding, making sure that we’re always helping the underserved communities in Bed-Stuy and Bushwick, the 57th district of the board,” Miller said. “My favorite part is helping people who don’t have access to healthcare, helping them get the care they need.”
Honoree Nissi Johnathon felt the same way about education. As Principal of United Charter High Schools for Advanced Math and Science, she discussed the importance of balancing trade skills with college access and recognizing educators.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity and to be able to be celebrated,” she said. “The world of education, I would say, is not celebrated enough.”
Honoree Corinne Hammons, the President & CEO of Little Flower Children and Family Services said, “Brooklyn residents are exactly themselves, outspoken, loud and individual — they’re fantastic,” she said. “We want to expand and help even more kids and families, especially in the area of mental health.”
Schneps Media honors Power Listers to honor leaders across the NY Metro area, including Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, Long Island, and the East End. Next year will be the 20th anniversary of highlighting and connecting Power Listers.
“We all deserve a pat on the back occasionally, and Schneps Media is doing such a great job in doing that,” said Rev. Edward L. Lai of the Bensonhurst Center for Rehabilitation & Fairview Nursing Care Center.
