Gaza health officials say at least 45 people are dead after an Israeli airstrike on a tent camp in Rafah. Israel’s military launched the attack after it intercepted rockets fired by Hamas into Israel over the weekend. Israel says two senior Hamas officials were killed in the attack, but the strike also triggered a massive fire that engulfed tents and structures and killed dozens who were already displaced.
On Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the airstrike in the area of Rafah was not intended to cause civilian casualties and would be investigated. Meanwhile, Israeli National Public Diplomacy Directorate spokesperson Avi Hyman said that Hamas was carrying out terrorist activities under the cover of their own civilian population in “a double war crime.”
“In Rafah, we already evacuated about one million non-combatant residents and despite our utmost effort not to harm non-combatants, something unfortunately went tragically wrong,” Netanyahu said in a speech in parliament that was interrupted by shouting from opposition lawmakers. “We are investigating the incident and will reach conclusions, because this is our policy.”
On the world stage, Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said that Canada is “horrified” by the images coming out of Rafah and that “the killing of innocent civilians is completely unacceptable.” Irish Foreign Minister Micheál Martin said that Israel’s actions were “in violation of the International Court of Justice,” while European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said that “it proves that there is no safe place in Gaza.”
