Ford Pauses Work on $3.5 Billion Battery Plant

Ford is halting work on a major battery plant in the northern U.S. state of Michigan, the automaker said Monday, just seven months after launching the project with a Chinese partner.

The stoppage, which a Ford representative confirmed to AFP, comes as the company faces a major strike along with both of the other “Big Three” U.S. automakers, Stellantis and General Motors.

The Ford spokesperson insisted the decision about the $3.5 billion battery plant had not been related to the ongoing strike, but rather the site’s future economic viability.

“We’re pausing work and limiting spending on construction on the Marshall project until we’re confident about our ability to competitively operate the plant,” the spokesperson said.

“We haven’t made any final decision about the planned investment there,” he added.

In February, Ford announced the project in Marshall, Michigan, as a way to diversify its battery profile away from its current exclusive use of nickel cobalt manganese (NCM), which are costly to produce because of raw material scarcity.

Ford said it would work with the Chinese company Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. to manufacture lithium iron phosphate batteries beginning in 2026 at the Marshall plant.

Several Republican officials had voiced opposition to the plant due to the partnership with a Chinese company.

The technology involves less-expensive raw materials and can tolerate more frequent and faster charging than NCM batteries, the company said at the time.

The auto giant said it is targeting annual global output of 600,000 electric vehicles by end-2023 and 2 million by the end of 2026.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, touted the announcement in February as “another win for Michigan,” citing the addition of 2,500 new manufacturing jobs.

President Joe Biden on Tuesday is set to visit Michigan to join a UAW picket line in support of striking workers at the Detroit Three automakers.

Donald Trump was never the most coherent or cogent communicator, to put it politely. But if you’ve been paying attention over the past two and a half years you’ve seen Trump’s cognitive abilities gradually collapse, to the point where he’s turned into an incoherently pale imitation of his former self. Now that Trump feels pressure to put himself out there more often in order to combat the perception that he’s a defendant not a candidate, his senility is becoming more clear to all involved.

On Monday alone, Trump incoherently appeared to claim that Jeb Bush was President of the United States. Trump also claimed that he’s facing Joe Biden in an election five months from now, meaning he either thinks the general election is in February, or he thinks Biden is his Republican primary opponent. And this was just one day.

Trump has also recently claimed that he ran against Barack Obama in 2016, suggested that we’ve only had one World War thus far, and didn’t appear to understand that he was the one who gave Dr. Fauci a medal.

Our friends over at Meidas Touch are referring to Donald Trump as “disoriented and confused,” and that sums it up well. It’s important to remember that while Trump is declining rapidly these days, he’s been senile for quite awhile now. It’s just that during the previous two and a half years, Trump’s handlers mostly kept him out of public view. But anyone who has been paying close attention has seen this coming since early 2021. Trump has been on a harsh downward cognitive spiral ever since he was forced out of office.

Donald Trump isn’t merely misspeaking. These aren’t gaffes. These aren’t occasional senior moments. This is a guy who now says incoherently senile things every time he appears in public. He doesn’t remember who he ran against. He doesn’t appear to remember his time in office. He definitely doesn’t understand who he’s currently running against or how far away the next election is. Trump’s senility is as serious of a story as his criminal trials, and it’s well past time for the mainstream media to start acknowledging that Trump is full blown senile.

US asks Mexico for fresh workers“ rights review at auto parts facility

The U.S. made another appeal to Mexico to review alleged labor violations under a regional trade pact on Monday, with the latest investigation centered on a Teklas Automotive facility in the Mexican state of Aguascalientes.

The latest review marks the U.S. Trade Representative office’s 14th labor rights complaint against facilities in Mexico since the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on trade took effect in 2020, including nine this year.

U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai said the request was intended to “address a serious violation of workers’ rights” at the automotive parts factory, involving an employer possibly terminating workers for engaging in union activity.

“Today’s action underscores the United States’ unceasing commitment to using the tools established in the USMCA to protect workers’ rights to organize for and join the union of their choice,” Tai said in a statement.

Teklas, which was founded in the 1970s in Turkey and later expanded to Europe, North America, and China, calls itself a “leading” global supplier of automotive fluid systems with 12 plants in six countries, according to its website.

Washington wants the Mexican government to review the matter under the USMCA’s Rapid Response Labor Mechanism.

The Mexican government has ten days to review the U.S. request, and if it accepts, another 45 days to investigate the case.

Mexico has recently denied two requests for probes into labor rights concerns, rejecting a U.S. call to review Grupo Yazaki’s auto components factory in the state of Guanajuato and also a Grupo Mexico mine labor probe.

Teklas did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Molotov cocktails thrown at Cuban embassy in Washington

2023-09-25T20:45:17Z

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said on Monday (September 25) that the U.S. has been in touch with Cuban officials after an assailant attacked the Cuban embassy in Washington with two Molotov cocktails.

An assailant attacked the Cuban embassy in Washington with two Molotov cocktails on Sunday night, Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla said on X, adding that nobody was hurt.

The attack occurred just hours after Cuba’s leader Miguel Díaz-Canel returned to the island, having attended events at the United Nations in New York last week.

The embassy reopened in 2015 when the countries restored diplomatic ties severed since 1961. Rodriguez said shots had also been fired at the building from a rifle in a previous attack in 2020.

“Anti-Cuban groups turn to terrorism when they feel impunity, something Cuba has repeatedly warned US authorities about,” Rodriguez said on his X account.

Earlier this month U.S. and Cuban officials made progress on a range of issues during high-level talks in Washington. Cuba’s main concerns are that it remains on the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism and the Biden administration’s continuation of Washington’s Cold War-era economic embargo.

U.S. Senator Robert Menendez is a staunch and true friend of Israel. Always has been. While this depiction has been conferred in recent years too loosely and too liberally on too many people, few have earned the accolade and deserve the suffix as much as he has.

Sen. Robert Menendez, the New Jersey Democrat who is a stalwart of the mainstream pro-Israel lobby in the Senate, told Benjamin Netanyahu that his partnership with an extremist leader could shatter support for Israel in the United States.

Menendez raised what he said were “concerns” about Itamar Ben-Gvir with the former — and hopeful — Israeli prime minister during a visit to Israel in early September, Axios reported on Sunday. At the time, Netanyahu had just hosted Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, another right-wing party leader, at his Caesarea home.

The visit was part of Netanyahu’s effort to work with Ben-Gvir, an adherent of the racist beliefs of the late rabbi and politician, Meir Kahane, to unite far-right parties into a single bloc so they can maximize their clout in Israel’s Nov. 1 election. Ben-Gvir, who has also lionized Baruch Goldstein, the Jewish extremist who massacred 29 Palestinians at worship in 1994, would likely secure a cabinet position in a Netanyahu-led government.

According to the Axios report, Netanyahu was peeved at Menendez’s statement, but the senator pressed the matter further, saying Ben-Gvir’s inclusion would seriously erode bipartisan support for Israel.

Major pro-Israel groups made a similar warning three years ago when Netanyahu, then the prime minister, was contemplating a similar arrangement. In the end, Netanyahu did not need the extremists to form a government.

Menendez is one of Israel’s most outspoken supporters in the Senate, earning huge cheers when he attends pro-Israel events. He is also influential, chairing the Foreign Relations Committee. Earlier this year he warned the Biden administration that he would oppose reentry into the Iran nuclear deal — a key Biden priority and a move Israel opposes — if the terms turned out to be as they were reported at the time.

‘Ridiculous’: Democrats Refuse To Believe Poll Showing Biden Losing Big to Trump

Democrats simply rejected a new Washington Post/ABC News poll that shows President Joe Biden losing by double-digits in a head-to-head general election matchup against former President Donald Trump.

The news outlets behind the poll seemed to anticipate the backlash even as they released the findings on Sunday. “The difference between this poll and others, as well as the unusual makeup of Trump’s and Biden’s coalitions in this survey, suggest it is probably an outlier,” cautioned the Post. “Question order can be a factor,” advised ABC News.

Other media were similarly apologetic in reporting the results.

Politico: “Polling more than a year before an election, when most voters are not paying attention and we don’t know the outcome of the big events that will shape that election—the Trump trials, Biden’s health, the state of the economy, events in Congress, new Supreme Court opinions, the effects of billions of dollars in advertising—is interesting but doesn’t tell us much beyond what we already know: that the election will be close and that either Trump or Biden could win.”

New York Times: “… it included a general-election result that was far outside the range that other high-quality polls have found recently, which raised questions about the Post/ABC poll’s accuracy.”

Axios: “Reality check: The Post acknowledged today that the poll results are ‘probably an outlier.’

“Trump’s sizable lead ‘is significantly at odds with other public polls that show the general election contest a virtual dead heat.’”

I deleted a post about an ABC/Washington Post poll of the Biden/Trump matchup because I quickly got some smart DMs pointing out that some of its findings seem absurd. It’s probably wise not to rile people up based on questionable polling, especially this far out from Nov 2024.

— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) September 24, 2023

For many Democrats, though, the media’s soft-pedaling of the poll was not good enough.

Larry Sabato, Democratic pollster: “Ignore the Washington Post – ABC poll. It’s a ridiculous outlier (Trump up 10 over Biden—laughable). My question: How could you even publish a poll so absurd on its face? Will be a lingering embarrassment for you.”

Matt Barreto, Democratic pollster: “… you should probably just ignore it and move on.”

Cornell Belcher, Democratic strategist: “This poll indefensible. & we need a conversation abt the ethics of media driving narratives frm this data.”

Andrew Bates, White House deputy press secretary: “Check the flux capacitor, @ABCPolitics.”

Malcom Kenyatta, Democratic Pennsylvania state lawmaker: “Many reasons to ignore this poll, but this [the finding that Trump leads Biden by 20 points among voters under age 35] is probably the most laughable part.”

“Joe Biden is going to win millennials and Gen Z by huge margins — and in so doing win re-election.”

Chris Jackson, Democratic Tennessee election commissioner: “The poll … released this morning is being called an outlier by the people who did it, but the media will run with anyway. …

“I’m gonna be honest. I really dislike the media. Like really.”

Victor Shi, Democratic activist: “Mark my words: That poll is absolute trash & under no circumstance will that ever be the case. Shame on the Washington Post for even including that poll.”

While the Post-ABC News was unusual in the size of the advantage it found for Trump, it was in keeping with years of increasingly bad polling for Biden, including another one released on Sunday, by NBC News.

NBC News: “[W]hat also stands out in the poll are the warning signs for Biden beyond his age—including an all-time high disapproval of his job performance, fewer than 4 in 10 voters approving of his handling of the economy and lagging interest in the election among key parts of the Democratic base.”

Trump holds an advantage over Biden in the seven states where the 2020 presidential election was closest, according to a new poll.https://t.co/AYB0nEstGG

— Washington Free Beacon (@FreeBeacon) September 15, 2023

It’s really really hard to release outlying poll results, so you’ve got to give credit to ABC/Post here, but I do have a fairly major quibble with ABC/Post here: if you release consecutive ‘outlying’ poll results — R+7 in May, R+10 today — you don’t get to dismiss your results

— Nate Cohn (@Nate_Cohn) September 24, 2023

In a related story, the most recent 5 major polls has Trump’s support among Black voters at 20 percent, more than triple of what Romney received in 2012. Trump is also getting 42 percent of the Hispanic vote in the same poll. If this holds, and it should, lights out for Biden. https://t.co/sq7oYHwPJS

— Joe Concha (@JoeConchaTV) September 22, 2023

Flashback: Trump was once widely criticized for rejecting unfavorable polls.

CNN: “Donald Trump Just Accidentally Told the Truth About His View on Polls”:

Exactly one week ago, I wrote these words: “If you listen to him long enough – no easy chore – Donald Trump will tell you all his secrets.”

Well, he did it again.

During his speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Dallas, Texas, over the weekend, Trump let loose with this line explaining his strategy on polling:

“If it’s bad, I say it’s fake. If it’s good, I say that’s the most accurate poll ever.”

Yup. That about captures it!

From Floods to Drought, Kashmir Wrestles With Climate Extremes

Sitting in a row as the sun beats down, more than a dozen men fish from a small peninsula that has emerged along the Jhelum, one of the major rivers in Indian Kashmir.

From heavy rains and flash floods earlier this year to a heat wave in September that saw temperatures in the Kashmir Valley hit peaks not seen in more than a century, the impact of the extremes of climate change are surfacing, sometimes in unexpected places.

“I had never set foot on the riverbed before. This is the first time all of us are witnessing the lowest water level of the Jhelum,” said Mushtaq Ahmad Dar, a local produce salesman. “People are engaging in various activities on the exposed surface of the river that looked threatening a few months ago.”

Three months ago, the Jhelum’s banks expanded beyond its capacity due to excessive rainfall until the last week of May. The continuous rise of the river’s water level then created panic among residents who worried that the region might see extreme flooding similar to summer 2014 when hundreds were killed and nearly a million were displaced.

Dar said that after the floods in June and July, it was like the sun was reborn in August and September.

“Rivers, canals and streams have dried up,” he said, adding that Kashmir now needs more rain.

The absence of rainfall and the heat wave caused a scarcity of water in different parts of the valley, including some areas of the capital city, Srinagar. People from multiple villages through the Kashmir Valley collected contaminated water to drink.

“Our area already faces [a] shortage of drinking water, but this year, our problem multiplied as we faced [an] acute water shortage. We collected contaminated water from a stream and utilized it for consumption,” Farooq Ahmad, a resident of the Nasirpora area of Budam district, told VOA.

“The water from the stream was filtered and later on boiled so that we can consume it,” he said, adding that villagers requested the Jal Shakti Department — a government agency that ensures a clean water supply for drinking and irrigation purposes — to send water tankers to the village. “But no one cared.”

In a recent interview with the English daily newspaper Greater Kashmir, Ashok Kumar Gandotra, chief engineer of the Jal Shakti Department, admitted that local residents are facing a drinking water crisis.

“Most of the sources, including the mighty River Jhelum, have almost dried up,” Gandotra said. “People are facing a crisis. When there is a problem in the source, how can there be no problem?” he said, adding that the department is trying to meet the requirement by supplying water through tankers where there is acute storage.

Aijaz Rasool, an environmentalist, attributes the rise in temperature in the Himalayan region to climate change and global warming. He noted that in September, the Kashmir Valley recorded its second hottest day for that month in 132 years, when the temperature rose to 34.2 degrees Celsius on September 12. Average temperatures in September are typically between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius.

“Kashmir is located between two Himalayan ranges — the Karakoram on the Afghanistan side and the Hindukush on the Indian side — and both regions are experiencing the impact of climate change and global warming,” Rasool told VOA. “Glaciers are melting, rivers and streams are drying up, and our water reservoirs are getting depleted. As a result, our valley is suffering on multiple fronts.”

Rasool said developed and developing countries must find a way to collaborate to combat climate change and global warming. The 2015 Paris Agreement set a goal to limit the increase of global temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius. According to the United Nations World Meteorological Organization, temperatures between June and August of this year were the hottest three months ever recorded.

“As far as our region is concerned, each individual has to play a role, along with the government, to save and conserve our water bodies such as lakes, wetlands, rivers and streams, whose hydrological cycle is presently disturbed,” Rasool said. “Jhelum today no longer poses the flood risk it did in 2014,” Rasool said, pointing out that current water levels have reached a 70-year low.

Kashmir’s heat wave has also damaged the horticultural and agricultural sectors, especially cash crops such as apples and saffron, considered the backbone of Jammu and Kashmir’s economy.

Khurshid Malik, an apple trader and farmer, told VOA that the drought ruined more than half of his crops. Apples need temperatures to stay between 20 to 30 degrees Celsius in order to maintain perfect color and size.

“If the temperature crosses 30 degrees Celsius, rainfall is a must, otherwise the apples will catch different kinds of diseases, including scab, and the fruit size will be small,” Malik said. “I believe more than 50% of the apple crop has got damaged, which surely will impact the livelihood of many people.”

Sonam Lotus, director of the Meteorological Department of Jammu and Kashmir, told VOA that while the heat wave lasted for 15 days until September 20, relief is on the horizon.

“The lower regions also received rain yesterday, and it is expected that the temperature will decrease in the coming days,” he said.

Pro-Israel Senator Menendez warns Bibi against partnering with far-right
