VLADIMIR Putin has lost more than 1,200 troops in just 24 hours, marking Russia’s deadliest day in its meatgrinder war with Ukraine.

The surge in casualties comes after Western nations – including the US – gave Ukraine the green light to strike Russia with their weapons.

Ukrainian general staff claimed on Monday that the Russian military suffered 1,270 casualties in the past 24 hours.

Kyiv also destroyed 14 Russian tanks, 22 armoured personnel carriers, and 47 artillery pieces, they said.

The UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed Russia lost about 1,200 troops per day in May and said the total number of troops lost since the start of the bloody war had likely surpassed 500,000.

In Nineteen Eighty-Four, the Party manipulates people’s perception of reality, so that citizens of Oceania believe that “war is peace” and “ignorance is strength”.

Russia today has a similar feel about it.

The state media here claims that Russia’s war in Ukraine is not an invasion, but a defensive operation; that Russian soldiers are not occupiers, but liberators; that the West is waging war on Russia, when, in reality, it was the Kremlin that ordered the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Over the weekend, US President Joe Biden proposed a three-phase ceasefire plan between Israel and Hamas. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has tentatively accepted the proposal but also called it a “not so good plan”. Meanwhile, Netanyahu said that there would be no ceasefire in Gaza until Hamas was defeated militarily. Ministers in the Israeli government have also threatened to quit and withdraw their support to Netanyahu if he accepts the plan. On the other hand, Hamas has said that they will accept Biden’s ceasefire proposal if Israel accepts it first. Meanwhile, thousands of Israelis rallied as they urged Netanyahu to accept Biden’s proposal to secure the release of hostages.

June 3, 1940: When Troops Fighting Nazi Germany Were Evacuated from Dunkirk | Firstpost Rewind

On this day in 1940, around 3,35,000 Allied troops were evacuated from Dunkirk. They had been sandwiched between the sea and Nazi soldiers. Britain had to enlist fishing boats and ferries to bring back the trapped troops. It remains one of the biggest and most miraculous evacuations in military history.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the public face of the federal government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, defended himself in a GOP-led House subcommittee hearing Monday morning against accusations of improper conduct.

The hearing was the latest effort among Republicans to question the U.S. response to the pandemic, including how pandemic prevention plans were created and communicated.

Monday’s session was in part focused on the origins of the pandemic and the nation’s role in virus research in China. There are a number of theories about how COVID’s spread began, including a natural jump from animals to humans and a laboratory leak. Intelligence assessments on how the virus began are inconclusive.
