New York Liberty squeezed out a win against the Las Vegas Aces with a 75-71 victory in front of a sold-out crowd at Barclays Center on Sept. 8. 

From tip-off, New York fans brought the energy while the dominating athletes of Liberty brought prowess, showcasing their strength against the reigning WNBA champions. Sunday’s dub was Liberty’s third match-up and third win against the team this season. The Aces put the pressure on Liberty, but the Brooklyn team came out on top after a final quarter that left fans on the edge of their seats.

Liberty established dominance in the first half, leading 45-33 at halftime. On the other hand, the Aces struggled with foul-heavy play in the first half, much to the team’s frustration.

Sandy Brondello, head coach for Liberty, called it a “highly physical competition.” Breanna Stewart led New York’s offense, finishing with a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds. Her performance became particularly impressive when she took the plays up a notch in the second quarter.

Stewart’s defensive skills were also on full display as she blocked a potential game-tying layup from Jackie Young with just five seconds remaining, sealing the victory for the Liberty. Sabrina Ionescu, another standout for New York, contributed 14 points, four rebounds, and four assists while extending her impressive streak of consecutive games scoring over ten points to 33.

Another key player, Jonquel Jones, contributed 15 points on efficient shooting, eight rebounds, and four assists. Her notable achievement of recording 500 career assists makes her one of the fastest players in WNBA history to reach that mark.

Liberty’s blend of offensive leads and defensive determination was critical. They maintained control throughout the game, even when the Aces attempted a comeback after the West Coast team was down 20 points. 

Despite missing A’ja Wilson, their key scorer and defensive player, who was out with an ankle injury, the Aces rallied in the fourth quarter, executing a 19-2 run that had the Liberty sweating as the clock wound down. The Aces’ competitive spirit kept fans on the edge, demonstrating why they are the defending champions. However, New York’s strong foundation prevailed as they held on for the win.

For Liberty fans, the reaffirmed their team’s resolve and determination for a championship run. As they prepare for their next challenge against the Dallas Wings, their record now stands at  29-6, and fans are feeling excited as the playoffs approach.

NYPD sources are denying Monday rumors that Police Commissioner Edward Caban is set to step down from his post in the coming days amid a federal investigation.

Politico reported on Sept. 9 that Caban could resign from his post in mere days following a probe that saw his cell phone confiscated and an investigation into the nightlife dealings of his twin brother. The report stated that Caban was set to mull over the decision alongside police brass before he steps out of the limelight in the coming days.

However, a top police official and a department spokesman both told amNewYorkMetro on Monday that the reported rumors were “completely fabricated,” and the commissioner had no plans to step down as of Monday. Politico cited four unnamed sources in its report about Caban’s apparent imminent resignation.

The story broke mere hours after Mayor Eric Adams was grilled about the ongoing controversy with the NYPD at an unrelated press conference in Queens. Hizzoner was quizzed on whether he believes Caban will remain police commissioner in the months to come.

“I don’t think anything in life is guaranteed, I would say this: When I chose Eddie, I chose him for his experience and what he brought after thirty-something years of service. Rumors are always out there,” Adams said. “There was nothing that came from me that fed those rumors at all.”

Rumors seem to be the keyword with some sources inside the department even contradicting themselves.

A retired NYPD official reported weeks prior that he believed a “shakeup” was coming in NYPD brass, which would have seen many of the leading officials, including the commissioner himself, rotated out at the end of the summer. However, those currently on the inside denounce the rumblings as conjecture.

“It’s all not true,” a top police official said.

A 15-year-old boy was stabbed outside a Prospect Heights high school on Monday, just three days into the new school year.

Details of the incident were still unclear as of 4 p.m. on Sept. 9, but police said they received a report of an incident near Eastern Parkway at 2:44 p.m. When officers arrived, they found a 15-year-old boy, whose name they did not release, with a single stab wound to the abdomen.

The victim was brought to Maimonides Medical Center in stable condition, police said. No other injuries were reported, and a suspect has not yet been identified. An investigation is ongoing as of Monday afternoon. 

Officers roped off a crime scene outside the Prospect Heights High School building at 883 Classon Ave. The building houses four different schools — the Brooklyn School for Music and Theater, The High School for Global Citizenship, Brooklyn Academy of Science and the Environment, and the International High School at Prospect Heights. 

The city’s Department of Education did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
