Polishing a local ‘gem’: Coney Island pol secures $10M for Kaiser Park renovations

Kaiser Park is set to get its day in the sun.

Council Member Justin Brannan announced he has secured $10 million for capital upgrades at Coney Island’s Kaiser Park. The funding, part of the Fiscal Year 2025 city budget, marks the first major capital improvement for the park.

Kaiser Park, located on Coney Island’s northern coast, is one of the neighborhood’s few recreational spaces and features a park house, playground, sports fields, courts, a track and waterfront amenities. The park also serves as a hub for community events, including those hosted by Friends of Kaiser Park, a local nonprofit.

Representatives from Brannan’s office said the park — first established in the 1930s — has suffered from years of neglect and fallen into disrepair. Locals have raised repeated concerns about the park’s paved paths, landscaping, playground and sports equipment.

The funding is expected to bring long-awaited renovations and revitalize the community’s quality of life.

“I am proud to put the funding in place to make that happen,” said Brannan, who also serves as chairman of the Council’s Finance Committee. “Kaiser Park is a total gem in the middle of a community that needs spaces to get outdoors, play, learn, grow, and simply be together.”

With the funding now secured, the Parks Department is set to begin the design phase of the multiyear reconstruction project to upgrade the park’s facilities.

“Kaiser is vital to youth and family life in Coney Island and provides the common ground necessary for keeping our neighborhood’s sense of community alive,” Brannan said. “A space that important should be treated and maintained like the treasure it is.”

The planned improvements are expected to greatly enhance the well-being of residents and visitors, the pol said, ensuring Kaiser Park remains a valued community asset for years to come.

“Promises made, promises kept,” Brannan said.
