The man accused of setting fire to a woman on board a Brooklyn train on Sunday morning remains in police custody awaiting charges, sources confirmed.

The as-yet-unnamed, 33-year-old suspect is being detained at the 60th Precinct; he is expected to face charges for strolling up to a woman on an F train and using a lighter to set her ablaze on Dec. 22. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to sources familiar with the investigation, police are holding off on charging the pyromaniac until the medical examiner officially determines that the victim perished as a result of smoke inhalation or as a result of the flames themselves.

Police officials reported that cops cuffed the alleged murderer Sunday afternoon on Herald Square after being spotted by a group of teens; he was still riding the subway.

However, sources told amNewYork Metro that when taken into custody, he was found in possession of an ID from a Queens shelter. Yet, police say it is unclear if he was staying at the shelter at the time of his arrest.

Meanwhile, cops confirmed that the suspect is an immigrant who illegally arrived in the U.S. from Guatemala in 2019.

Police confirmed that both the victim and the suspect did not know one another, and the attack was completely unprovoked. Sources also state that the suspect only has one prior arrest in Arizona, which is believed to have been connected with his alleged illegal entry into America.

Over 24 hours after the sickening incident shocked the city, NYPD detectives are still working to identify the female victim who was so severely burned she was left unrecognizable and unidentifiable.

The perpetrator is expected to be charged sometime later Monday.
