Police identify woman burned to death on Coney Island F train

Police have identified the woman who was burned to death aboard a Brooklyn F train in a shocking arson attack last week.

Debrina Kawam, 57, was so badly burned it took authorities several weeks to put a name to her body. Sources familiar with the investigation say that forensic investigators were able to identify Kawam through her fingerprints. Her last known address is listed as Toms River, New Jersey.

Law enforcement sources said Kawam appeared to be sleeping aboard the train at the Coney Island station, a well-known place of shelter for homeless individuals, when the suspected arsonist — identified as Guatemalan migrant Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, 33 — allegedly set her ablaze using a lighter.

Sources familiar with the case said Zapeta-Calil appeared to be inebriated at the time of the attack. He was caught on videotape allegedly attempting to fan the flames after the woman was set ablaze.

“This gruesome and senseless act of violence against a vulnerable woman will be met with the most serious consequences,” Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said in a Dec. 24 statement following Zapeta-Calil’s arraignment on charges of first and second-degree murder, and arson. He remains held in jail without bail, and faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment without parole if convicted of first-degree murder.

The grizzly fire death shocked the city, heightening many commuters’ sense of safety underground — even as the NYPD and Mayor Eric Adams, citing official crime statistics, maintain the subways are safe.

The incident has also prompted the controversial return of the Guardian Angels, who have begun patrolling the subways following the killing — with the volunteer group’s founder, Curtis Sliwa, questioning the accuracy of public safety reports.

“Stop with the nonsense of the analytics crime is down — what a joke,” Sliwa told Brooklyn Paper’s sister publication amNewYork Metro. “We’re going to show the city and the state what they should be doing. And maybe we can shame them into action, shame them into doing something instead of just talking about it.”

Last week, locals gathered at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station to mourn Kawam, who was unidentified at the time. The group held hands and prayed both at the station’s entrance and on the F Train platform near where she was killed.

Rev. Kevin McCall, who founded the Crisis Action Center, and the other advocates also called on elected officials to do more to keep New Yorkers safe on the subways.

“We are here today because of this horrific crime that has taken place. This crime should not have happened,” McCall said. “The slogan in this city is ‘if you see something, say something.’ But no one said something. No one did nothing. They just watched this young lady burn on fire alive.”

Kawam had dreams of becoming a flight attendant and was remembered by her high school classmates for her “million dollar smile,” according to reports. A 1985 graduate of Passaic Valley Regional High School in Little Falls, New Jersey, Kawam, known as “Debbie” or “Deb,” later faced hardships, living in New York City homeless shelters from September until her death.

Caught copper-handed: Second suspect nabbed for wire theft at Brooklyn Navy Yard

A 42-year-old man was arrested last month after allegedly attempting to steal copper from a shipyard at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

A security guard at GMD Shipyard on Flushing Avenue reported the incident to police around 8 a.m. on Dec. 18, saying the man was seen using tools to cut copper wiring. Officers responded and took the man into custody. Police said the suspect had a prior summons for burglary.

The arrest occurred just over a week after a similar incident at the same shipyard. On Dec. 10, police arrested a 38-year-old man accused of stealing $10,000 worth of copper wiring from a crane at the facility.

Reports of burglary were up last year in Brooklyn Navy Yard’s 88th Precinct, which includes Clinton Hill and surrounding areas, according to Police Department data. As of Dec. 29, when the most recent data is available, the precinct had recorded 147 burglaries, a 40% increase from the 105 burglaries reported during the same period in 2023.

Oh, baby! Brooklyn welcomes first newborns of 2025

Three Brooklyn babies just missed the ball drop.

The new year was twice as nice for a Brooklyn family who welcomed twin girls to NYC just after midnight Wednesday — the city’s first babies of 2025.

Proud parents Sheneece Crumbie and Jordan Tomlinson saw the birth of their new daughters at 12:01 a.m. and 12:02 a.m., respectively, at NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County in East Flatbush. The little ones have yet to be named and are the couple’s third and fourth children, the hospital said.

The first girl weighed 6 pounds, 13.9 ounces, while her baby sister followed at 5 pounds, 15.4 ounces. According to NYC Health + Hospitals, both youngsters and their mom are doing fine.

Not far behind was a special delivery at Maimonides Medical Center.

Malia Carrasquillo — weighing 8 pounds, 9 ounces — came into the world at 3:54 a.m. on Jan. 1, making her the Borough Park hospital’s first newborn of the year.

Malia was originally due on Christmas, according to her mother, Marie Aserat, and proud father, Mark Carrasquillo, of Crown Heights, but “she had other plans to be born in the new year,” Aserat said.

Marie, a teacher, said she is excited about the journey ahead.

“I am looking forward to the challenge of caring for and raising her and seeing what lays ahead,” she said.

New father Mark also shared his excitement, saying, “I am looking forward to the new adventures that await us as a family.”

“Malia is full of surprises. Her original due date was Christmas. We have been joking that she only gets one present. I think she heard us,” said Aserat. “To be an entire week late and then the first baby born on another holiday, marking a whole new year — you make plans, and God laughs.”

Both mother and baby are doing well under the care of Dr. June Ng and the expert labor and delivery team at Maimonides.

Dr. Ng, who delivered Malia, told Brooklyn Paper that she always tries to be on call for New Year’s Eve. “I don’t have a number (of New Year’s babies delivered), but I always try to be on call for New Year’s because it makes it extra fun to share in these special moments with our patients.”

Dr. Janet Stein, director of obstetrics at Maimonides Health, agreed.

“Welcoming Brooklyn’s first baby of the year is always a special moment for our entire team,” she said. “It’s a wonderful way to begin 2025, and we’re honored to be part of this family’s celebration.”

When asked if she had any advice for new parents, Dr. Ng said simply, “Don’t forget to sleep and take care of yourself!”
