In a chilling case that highlights the dark intersection of high-stakes cryptocurrency and violent criminal enterprise, a 37-year-old crypto investor has been arrested and charged with the kidnapping and torture of a man who was held captive for weeks in an upscale Manhattan townhouse, as was reported by The Associated Press. The case has shocked both New York’s financial elite and law enforcement communities.
The suspect, John Woeltz, was arraigned Saturday on multiple felony charges, including kidnapping, assault, unlawful imprisonment, and criminal possession of a firearm. According to the AP report, Woeltz was denied bail by a Manhattan judge after prosecutors described him as a significant flight risk with access to a private jet and a helicopter. He was also ordered to surrender his passport.
The 28-year-old victim, an Italian national whose name has not been released, reportedly flew to New York City in early May. Details remain unclear regarding how Woeltz and the victim came into contact, but Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Michael Mattson said during Saturday’s arraignment that the victim was abducted on May 6. Citing information obtained by the AP, authorities believe others were involved in the plot, including at least one “unapprehended male” conspirator still at large.
According to court documents and statements made by Mattson, the victim was bound at the wrists, beaten with a firearm, shocked with electric wires, and drugged repeatedly during his confinement in an eight-bedroom townhouse in a high-end Manhattan neighborhood. Prosecutors allege that the captors’ sole aim was to extract the password to the victim’s Bitcoin wallet, leveraging threats of death and harm to his family.
The AP learned from a law enforcement official, who requested anonymity due to the ongoing investigation, that the torture extended over several weeks, during which the victim was terrorized and psychologically broken. At one point, Woeltz and an accomplice allegedly dragged the victim to the top of a staircase, dangled him over the edge, and threatened to drop him unless he relinquished his crypto access credentials.
The breakthrough came Friday, when the victim tricked his captors into allowing him to retrieve his laptop, claiming the Bitcoin password was stored there. As Woeltz’s attention was diverted, the victim fled the apartment and managed to flag down a traffic officer nearby. He was immediately taken to a local hospital where, according to the AP report, doctors confirmed he had injuries consistent with prolonged physical restraint and abuse.
A subsequent search of the townhouse, described by prosecutors as a “private prison,” uncovered a disturbing cache of evidence. As detailed in court by ADA Mattson and reported by The Associated Press, investigators found cocaine, a saw, chicken wire, body armor, night vision goggles, ammunition, and polaroid photographs showing the victim with a firearm pointed at his head. This array of items points to a premeditated and organized scheme, raising serious concerns about the presence of a broader criminal network operating under the guise of legitimate financial activity.
Woeltz’s attorney, Wayne Gosnell, offered no comment when contacted by reporters on Saturday. However, he noted that the court has already signaled its intent to treat the case with the utmost severity.
This case reflects a disturbing trend wherein digital currencies—known for their decentralization and anonymity—are becoming magnets for violent crime. Incidents of coercion, extortion, and even murder tied to cryptocurrency access are on the rise.
