‘We Do Things the Old Way’ | Sandwich City

On Avenue U, in the northeast corner of Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, is Brennan & Carr, a neighborhood joint known for its roast beef sandwich. This hot roast beef on a roll is beloved. Open since 1938, the staff and customers tend to measure their loyalty in decades, not years. Time seems to stand still at Brennan & Carr, but the quality, care and genuine hospitality never do. “Everything is done exactly as I remember as a kid,” the owner, Eddie Sullivan, said. Customers have some options when it comes to how they want their sandwich dipped in “the broth.” There’s the “dingle dangle,” where only the meat is dipped; 2) the standard dip, which is meat and then the top bun; 3) a “double dip,” which goes meat, then top bun, then whole sandwich; and 4) a “K.F.J.,” which stands for “knife and fork job,” which is a double dip plus more broth ladled on top. Trump rallies for Mike Lawler in NY: Thousands gather ahead of key race

A major political rally in the Hudson Valley brought thousands together as President Donald Trump campaigned for Rep. Mike Lawler ahead of a closely watched election. President Trump visited New York’s 17th Congressional District, speaking at the Fieldhouse at Rockland Community College – marking the first time a sitting president has visited Rockland County since 1976. The event drew a large crowd, with supporters filling the venue and chanting “Four more years!” during the speech. Trump highlighted Rep. Mike Lawler’s efforts on issues like the SALT tax deduction, saying it helped deliver thousands of dollars in tax relief to families across the region. More Republican candidates were also in attendance, including Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and Jackie Auringer, who is running in a neighboring congressional race. The appearance comes as the 17th Congressional District primary approaches on June 23, with Lawler set to face the Democratic winner in November in what is expected to be one of the most closely watched races in the country. » Subscribe to News 12: https://bit.ly/4dyeWzd About News 12: News 12 is the exclusive 24-hour local news service dedicated to bringing you the best local news and information about your neighborhoods. Tulsi Gabbard resigns as director of national intelligence

Tulsi Gabbard abruptly resigned as director of national intelligence, saying she is leaving the post due to her husband’s illness.
Tulsi Gabbard resigned as the U.S. Director of National Intelligence (DNI) on Friday, May 22, 2026, announcing that her resignation will take effect on June 30, 2026. [1]

Reason for Resignation

In her official resignation letter, Gabbard stated that she is stepping down from her role overseeing the nation’s 18 spy agencies to support her husband, Abraham Williams, who was recently diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer. She shared the letter publicly on social media, expressing that she could not in good conscience ask him to face the fight alone while continuing to serve in a demanding public role. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Intermed Succession

President Donald Trump accepted her resignation, posting on Truth Social that she has “done an incredible job, and we will miss her”. Trump announced that Aaron Lukas, the Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence and a former CIA officer, will take over as the acting director. [6, 7]

Background and Context

Gabbard’s departure ends a highly scrutinized 15-month tenure that began following her narrow confirmation in early 2025. While her official departure is attributed to her family’s medical emergency, political analysts note her exit follows months of reported behind-the-scenes friction with the White House. [6, 7, 8, 9]
  • Foreign Policy Clashes: As a known anti-interventionist, Gabbard frequently found herself out of step with top Trump administration officials, particularly regarding the U.S. military operations and strikes involving Iran.
  • Intelligence Reductions: During her time as DNI, she focused heavily on a restructuring effort, claiming to eliminate “bloated” agency operations and aiming to cut the workforce size.
  • Cabinet Turnover: Gabbard is the fourth high-profile female Cabinet official to depart President Trump’s second-term administration, following the recent exits of Attorney General Pam Bondi, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, and Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer. [3, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13]
