ICE agents snatched a young mother off a Brooklyn street Tuesday night, Brooklyn City Council Member Susan Zhuang told amNewYork Wednesday. 

The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 19, near the corner of Bay 32nd and 86th Streets in Bensonhurst. Zhuang was one of dozens of local residents who responded to the scene after hearing of ICE agents lurking in the neighborhood.

“I rushed over, and there’s four ICE agent cars there. By that time, they had already snatched a young lady from the street,” Zhuang told amNewYork. “I went to talk to a family and tried to get the resources they needed.”

According to Zhuang, the federal agents were initially spotted knocking on doors before the woman, only described as in her 20s and as a mother of an eight-month-old baby, was apparently lured out to the streets, where she was taken.

“The person did not hear the door knocking, and then she got a phone call, and then she came out. They got the person on the street. I think it’s a setup,” Zhuang said.

Reports of ICE’s presence brought dozens of people to the location with the apparent intention of observing and potentially interrupting ICE activity. That prompted a response from the NYPD, with several officers deployed to the location for crowd control.

“I was getting notifications in our chat that ICE was knocking on doors, so we rushed over here to see what was happening. It was about 20-40 of us just doing our best to keep them at bay,” one person who raced to the area said.

Zhuang told amNewYork that she knew of as many as 10 constituents in her district having been taken into ICE custody since March. While she said she does not oppose the apprehension of criminals in ICE’s sights, she is outraged that the agents have been arresting individuals with no criminal records and tearing families apart.

The council member added that ICE detainments are also having an impact on the local economy in her primarily immigrant community.

“The ICE issue really actually affects the local economy, because I have a lot of immigrants in my district, a lot of immigrant stores. Business is down 30 to 40% because people are not traveling, they’re afraid to come out,” Zhuang said.

Zhuang urged her constituents to contact her office with any concerns about ICE activity in her area.

The Brooklyn woman who sped through a red light and killed a mother and two children on Ocean Parkway earlier this year was sentenced to three to nine years in prison on a plea deal on Wednesday. 

Miriam Yarimi, 33, initially faced a maximum sentence of five to 15 years in prison. Last month, she pleaded guilty to three counts of manslaughter as part of a plea deal offered by Judge Danny Chun — a deal offered despite protests from District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, who recommended she receive the maximum penalty. 

“This defendant is a reckless driver who cared about only herself when she raced in the streets of Brooklyn and wiped away nearly an entire family,” Gonzalez said in a statement. “She should not have been driving a car that day but, instead, she chose to callously ignore all traffic and safety laws when she caused this unspeakable carnage.”

Yarimi was tearful as she received her sentence in Brooklyn court on Wednesday. Reading from a prepared statement, she said was remorseful and regretted her decision to get behind the wheel that day. 

Herschel Kulefsky, a lawyer representing the victim’s family, said they were “outraged” by Yarimi’s sentence.

“Even the maximum sentence probably would not be sufficient in this case, but this is the bare minimum,” he told reporters outside the courthouse on Wednesday. 

Kulefsky said they “don’t believe there is any remorse,” and that Yarimi’s apology “was only for the purpose of sentencing.” She had refused to apologize to the family previously, he added. 

On March 29, Yarimi — whose license was suspended — sped through a steady red light at the intersection of Ocean Parkway and Quentin Road, slammed into the back of a turning vehicle, and drove into 34-year-old Natasha Saada and her three children, who were crossing Ocean Parkway with the light. 

Saada and her two daughters, 8-year-old Diana and 5-year-old Deborah, were killed instantly. Her 4-year-old son survived but suffered skull fractures, brain bleeds and had to have a kidney removed as a result of his injuries. 

The five occupants of the first car Yarimi hit — an Uber driver, a mother and three children — also sustained minor injuries. 

Yarimi’s car rolled several times before coming to a stop upside-down more than 100 feet from the crash site, according to the DA’s office. She suffered minor injuries, and had to be removed from her vehicle with the jaws of life. 

She had been traveling at 68 mph in a 25 mph zone, the investigation found, and did not apply the brakes before the impact. Surveillance footage showed her using her cell phone while running a different red light a block ahead of the crash site. 

Gonzalez, in April, said the crash was “one of the worst I’ve seen in over 25 years as a prosecutor.” Records show that Yarimi, a wigmaker whose 2023 Audi had the license plate “WIGM8KER,” had racked up 108 parking and driving violations since 2023, including a violation for failure to stop at a red light just two days before the fatal crash.
