New York families will have lots of opportunities to meet police officers, fellow community members and various organizations as National Night Out Against Crime returns to the five boroughs on Aug. 4.
The annual event, which takes place nationwide in various locations on the first Tuesday in August, is aimed at strengthening relationships between residents and police departments while promoting neighborhood safety. Participating NYPD precincts will host various celebrations featuring food, music, games, demonstrations and giveaways.
There will also be plenty of opportunities for New Yorkers to speak with the officers servicing their communities.
This year, there will be some extra stand-out activities planned at various events. At the 72nd Precinct’s event in Sunset Park, Brooklyn; participants will have a chance to win a free bike, while DJ Shug will be providing music at the 113th Precinct’s event at Baisley Pond Park.
PSA5’s event in Upper Manhattan will have block party energy with lots of games, activities and summer-time foods.
A bookmobile anniversary, local vendors and good eats at Rodney Park
Lots of local community vendors will set up tables at the 90th Precinct’s event in Rodney Park. As a special treat, the Brooklyn Public Library’s Bookmobile 75 will be on site to celebrate 75 years of the library system delivering books, resources and programs to neighborhoods across the borough.
According to organizers of the event, Bookmobile staff will be available to help New Yorkers at the event check out books, get a new library card and renew their cards. The fun also includes free giveaways.
National Night Out Against Crime, which launched in 1984, encourages Americans to get to know one another and work together with police to reduce crime and improve public safety. Millions of people attend Night Out events each year.
Dozens of NYPD police stations will participate in Night Out events across the boroughs this year. All of the events are free to attend.
