Brighton Beach man sentenced to life without parole for fatal stabbing of former roommate

A Brighton Beach man has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the fatal stabbing of his former roommate in a 2020 attack that prosecutors described as a premeditated ambush.

Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced that Pavel Orgaev, 62, was sentenced today by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Eugene Guarino after being convicted of first-degree murder, first-degree burglary and first-degree criminal contempt following a jury trial in December 2024.

According to prosecutors, Orgaev violated an active order of protection when he entered the victim’s Brighton Beach apartment in the early morning hours of May 11, 2020, and fatally stabbed him.

“This was a brutal and premeditated attack carried out in the supposed safety of the vitim’s home,” Gonzalez said. “The defendant ignored a cout order returned to the apartment they once shared and viciously took a life in a horiffic act of violence. Today’s sentence holds him accoubtable for that harm.”

Prosecutors said Orgaev and the victim, 45-year-old Dmitri Buvenov, had been living together in a basement apartment in Brighton Beach in May 2020.

According to the evidence presented at trial, an alleged physical altercation between the two men left Buvenov with broken ribs. Orgaev was arrested following the incident, and a court order of protection directed him to stay away from Buvenov.

Despite that order, prosecutors said Orgaev walked from a nearby residence to the apartment they had previously shared at approximately 3:30 a.m. on May 11, 2020. He unlawfully entered the apartment and stabbed Buvenov multiple times.

Buvenov was found inside the apartment and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office credited members of the Kings County District Attorney’s Office Detective Investigators, the Digital Evidence Lab and Homicide Paralegal Sarah-Jane Quashie for assisting with the investigation.

The case was prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Steven Bravo of the Homicide Bureau and Assistant District Attorney Chow Xiw, deputy bureau chief, under the supervision of Homicide Bureau Chief Leila Rosini.
