Eight muralists transformed Williamsburg’s Bedford Slip into an outdoor art gallery during the Williamsburg Mural Festival on July 25 and 26.
Over the two day event, the artists produced their murals in public, making the creative process part of the exhibition. Instead of arriving to view completed pieces inside a traditional gallery, visitors could watch the murals develop and interact with the people creating them.
The festival – now in its second year – attracted local artists, community leaders, elected officials and neighborhood residents. Art Everyone Loves (ARTEL) organized the annual event, seeking to provide greater exposure for working artists while using a shared outdoor space to bring members of the community together.
“It is so beautiful to just see people come by, enjoy the arts, say hi to the artists, and really just have a moment to have a third space and community here,” state Sen. Kristen Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez’s remarks emphasized the social role that public art can play. By displaying the artists’ work in an open community setting, the festival offered visitors a place to gather without requiring them to enter a museum or private exhibition space.
Assembly Member Emily Gallagher said the event continued a long artistic tradition within the district.
“This district has a vibrant history of art, culture and creativity,” Gallagher said. “Events like the Williamsburg Mural Festival ensure that the artists and art lovers in our community have space to connect and be inspired. I’m proud to support it.”
The gathering highlighted the relationship between Williamsburg and its creative community while giving eight muralists a visible platform for their work. Each artist contributed to the larger outdoor exhibition, allowing several individual pieces to be experienced together in the same public setting.
For the participating muralists, the festival provided more than a place to display finished artwork. Painting in front of an audience allowed them to demonstrate the time, technique and decision-making involved in producing a mural.
Visitors were able to experience the exhibition as it evolved. The appearance of Bedford Slip changed as the artists added new colors, images and details to their pieces over the course of the weekend.
By bringing artists and residents into the same space, the Williamsburg Mural Festival presented public art as both a creative expression and a neighborhood activity. What began with eight artists and their unfinished surfaces concluded as an outdoor collection created in full view of the community.
